Oslo has a unique parliamentary-style city government.
Structure
Oslo’s government is led by a Governing Mayor (byrådsleder — the executive head) and a Mayor (ordfører — the ceremonial head). This system mirrors the national parliamentary model.
Governing Mayor
Eirik Lae Solberg (Conservative Party/Høyre) serves as the Governing Mayor, the executive head of the city government.
Mayor
Anne Lindboe (Conservative Party/Høyre) has been Mayor since October 2023. The mayor has a ceremonial role, presiding over the City Council.
City Council
59 elected members who serve as the legislative body and elect the Governing Mayor and Mayor.
Boroughs
Oslo is divided into 15 boroughs (bydeler), each with local autonomy over schools, parks, and social services.
City Hall Building
Oslo City Hall (Rådhuset) is the iconic red brick twin-tower building on the harbour, opened in 1950. It houses the city council and administration, and hosts the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony every December. It has the largest carillon in the Nordics.
